Once I was sitting in my garden on a summer morning and listening to two birds chirping. Suddenly। heard a burp. I looked around in astonishment, but nobody was in sight. There was a pause, then suddenly there was a voice too. It was a very sing-song voice.
“Oh, my Burpy! Oh, why don’t you stop your burps for birdness’ sake! Oh please…”
There was no doubt about it— but how was it even possible! In the end, I admitted the truth. I could hear birds talking and I was probably the only one too! I took a dare and spoke.
“Hello, what’s your name?”
I was shocked by the cheeky reply I got.
“First tell us your name, else we ain’t going to say nothing.”
“You already spoke a million words,” said the other bird. Then the bird smiled at me and said, “Hi, his name is Burpy. He always burps. My name is Chirpy. I always chirp. Anyway, thanks for the bird-house.”
I overcame my shock and tried to be friendly,
“Um… can you two stay here?”
“Sure, unless you have any problem of course.”
We kept chatting and chittering until mom called me for lunch. I went inside with the birds and kept them on the table.
“Mom,” I called.
My mother entered.
“Mom, can I keep these birds, please?”
My mom thought and thought and thought some more. Finally, she smiled and said, “Yes, you can keep them.”
I punched my fist in the air triumphantly.
Since then the birds have always stayed there with me and never left.
